The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to research, education, and using the power of information to protect human health and the environment. Manufacturers are permitted to use almost any ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products. Our government does not regulate or test cosmetic and personal care ingredients or products for safety before they're sold. EWG's goal is to fill in where manufacturers, distributors and the government leave off. 

EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database is an online safety guide for cosmetics and personal care products. This database provides safety ratings for nearly a quarter of all products on the market — 63,800 plus products and nearly 7,800 ingredients. The ratings range from 0 to 10. The larger the number, the greater the risk of chemical exposure. Skin Deep divides these rankings into the following ranges:

- 0-2 Low Hazard
- 3-6 Moderate Hazard
- 7-10 High Hazard
 
EWG's scientists created the Skin Deep Database as a one-of-a-kind resource, integrating their in-house collection of personal care product ingredient listings with more than 50 toxicity and regulatory databases.
