The U.S. was the first in the 1970s to initiate activity around identifying harmful chemicals in our cosmetics. At the time, we banned 10 chemical ingredients from cosmetics and grandfathered in all the remaining chemicals in production at the time (82,000 of them). The same law still protects these chemicals from being questioined and removed from our products. |

The U.S. was the first in the 1970s to initiate activity around identifying harmful chemicals in our cosmetics. At the time, we banned 10 chemical ingredients from cosmetics and grandfathered in all the remaining chemicals in production at the time (82,000 of them). The same law still protects these chemicals from being questioined and removed from our products.
The European Union, on the other hand, uses a "precautionary approach" as opposed to the "reactionary approach" used in the U.S. They have banned or severely restricted more than 1800 chemicals from their cosmetics. And Canada has a "hot list" of more than 530 ingredients that are banned from their cosmetics.
